Cllr Kathryn Barker
Kathryn Barker; who am I?
Many people in the West Hunsbury area probably already know me by sight or to talk to, as "the lady on the Mobility Scooter with the dog!" Meaning I am approachable to all for a chat or an ear to bend!
I moved to the Hunsbury area in 1986 and have lived and worked here ever since whilst bringing up my 2 children. Initially this was as a teacher of both History and P.E., then briefly at the County Council CS dept. As I ran my own subject department I was involved in budgeting and development. I have also been involved in setting up various children's county clubs. Therefore I still have a keen interest in sport, from grass roots level up, and its development and promotion. Recently I have been a volunteer of the Royal & Derngate; the theatre being another lifelong passion alongside reading and archaeology.
However, I am now part of the "Protected Characteristics" section of society as I am now registered disabled.
One of my main aims is to bring an understanding and develop awareness of the issues that face this group daily in our local area. I want to give a voice to this hidden community and help to promote equality for all by representing the ongoing developing needs of this increasingly growing sector.
Another aim is also reflected in my past Primary and Secondary school teaching role as I would seek to give an equal voice to helping develop a more community feel which encapsulates the needs of young children and all families.
