Works starts on Northampton Streetlight Revamp

Major improvement works of street lighting across town started this week.

The works will involve the replacement of current light heads which have low energy efficiency rating and will enable essential maintenance to columns that need repairing.

During the next six months over 1300 streetlights and columns will be replaced by Balfour Beatty Street Lighting with LED lights as part of the 2019/20 capital funding programme. The conversion to LED lights will generate long-term savings and a number of environmental benefits including a reduction in CO2 emissions of 72,130kgs per annum.

Councillor Phil Larratt, Deputy Leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: "Having made a commitment to doing everything we can to tackle the climate emergency and become carbon neutral as a town, looking at our street lights and making them as energy efficient as we can by converting them to the latest LEDs is an important step in achieving our objectives.

" As well as making them much more energy efficient, this programme delivers important improvements in the condition and safety of street lighting in town."

As part of the initial investigation, each lighting column was GPS plotted onto a map which will be added to the Borough Council's app so faults can easily be reported.
