Collection of unwanted brown bins to begin next week

The collection of unwanted brown bins from residents that have chosen not to subscribe to the garden waste collection services and do not intend to subscribe to the scheme next year will begin from Monday, 9 November.

The collections will continue on a weekly basis, round by round, until Friday, 4 December.

Each property that has not subscribed to the garden waste collection services will receive a letter with details about the week when their unwanted bin will be collected. It will also include a sticker to be placed on the back of the bin to help collection teams identify the bins that need to be removed. Properties that would like to present for collection more than one unused bin should present them empty and next to each other with the sticker on one of them. Letter distribution will take time, therefore, residents are urged to wait until Friday, 6 November, before contacting the council.

Residents can choose to keep their brown bin if they would like to sign up to the garden waste collection service for the remainder of the year or next time round in April 2021. Alternatively, unwanted bins can be reused for composting, storage or as a water butt. Councillor Jonathan Nunn, leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: "Following the introduction of the garden waste subscription service in April this year, we are now looking to recycle the unwanted bins from residents that don't need or want them anymore.

"It's encouraging to see so many of our residents have put their unused bins to good use by using them for composting, storage or as water butts, which is great for our environment.

"The bin collection will take time therefore we are asking residents to assist the process by presenting their bins empty as our teams will be unable to collect bins containing waste."

Unwanted brown bins will be broken down and used to make new recycling bins. Residents must ensure that their bin is presented empty and placed out for removal well ahead of their usual collection time which starts from 6.30am on their advised recycling collection day. Bins that contain waste will not be taken, and it will be the resident's responsibility to dispose of their bin at the household waste recycling centre.
